Q1: Is polished rod necessary, or can I use as-forged?
A: If you're machining the rod to final dimensions anyway, as-forged (rough-turned) saves cost — you'll cut the
surface off regardless. Polished rod makes sense when you need tight diameter tolerance before machining, or when
the bar is used as-is with minimal secondary work.
Q2: How does 310 behave under cyclic heating?
A: It handles thermal cycling well compared to lower-alloyed grades. The high chromium forms a stable oxide layer
that spalls less during heating and cooling. For extreme cycle frequency — say, daily from ambient to 1000 °C and
back — consider 310S (low carbon) to avoid sensitization over months of service.
Q3: Can 310 rod be welded?
A: Yes, with appropriate filler (typically 310 or 309 filler wire). The high carbon of standard 310 can cause
sensitization near the weld, so for welded assemblies that will see corrosive service at temperature, 310S is the
better choice. For non-corrosive high-temperature use, standard 310 welds without issue.
Q4: What hardness can I expect?
A: Annealed condition, typically around HRB 70–85. Not a hardenable grade — 310 is austenitic and does not respond
